DNA Programme

“It’s an excellent chance for our students that don’t get the opportunity to go to the theatre to see a live performance.” Nicky Rope, teacher at City Academy

The Tobacco Factory Theatre’s pioneering DNA initiative takes high quality theatre out into Bristol’s local communities, aiming to develop new audiences in areas of the city where cultural resources are more limited by giving those people who rarely or never experience live performance the chance to see it on their doorsteps. The venues promote the performances themselves and ticket prices are heavily capped (max. £5). By addressing some of the main practical reasons why people in certain areas of the city are less likely to attend - awareness, location and ticket price - DNA aims to break down barriers surrounding going to the theatre. At its heart, DNA is an ambitious initiative – one that aims to spark a relationship with the Tobacco Factory in particular and theatre in general that will last a life time.

The DNA Pilot - November 2010
After a three-week run at the TF’s Brewery Theatre, Fairground Theatre’s production of Bonnie & Clyde toured to four venues in key communities around Bristol, chosen for the unique way in which they could benefit from the initiative: two performing arts specialist schools (Fairfield High School and Oasis John Williams), the Park Local Opportunity Centre in Knowle (with whom the TF has already worked on 2009’s Voxpups project), and City Academy, Lawrence Hill.

DNA returns in May 2011. Follwoing a two-week run in the Brewery,award-winning drama After the Accident will tour to four communities around the city.
The schedule is as follows:
Tues 3 May, The Park Local Opportunity Centre, Knowle
Weds 4 May, Merchants’ Academy, Withywood
